How AI actually works

You've probably used ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini — or at least heard enough about them that it feels like you have. But most people have no idea what's actually happening when they type a question and get an answer back.

These tools all run on the same kind of technology: a large language model (LLM). Different companies build their own — OpenAI makes ChatGPT, Anthropic makes Claude, Google makes Gemini — but under the hood, they all work the same way.

Here's the honest, jargon-free version. No computer science degree required.

It's a Very Well-Read Parrot

Imagine a parrot that spent its entire life listening to humans talk. Not just one human — every human. Billions of conversations, books, articles, instructions, stories, arguments, recipes, love letters, legal documents.

This parrot never understood any of it. Parrots don't understand language. But after hearing enough patterns — "good morning" always appears at the start of the day, "thank you" appears after someone does something nice, "the capital of France is" almost always gets followed by "Paris" — the parrot gets really good at continuing any sentence you start.

You say "The weather today is—" and the parrot says "sunny and warm" because that's what usually comes next.

That parrot is basically how every AI chatbot works — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, all of them.

The technical name is a "large language model" (LLM). The core idea is simple: it predicts what word comes next. That's it. Over and over, one word at a time, until it's built a full response.

Why It's So Good at Sounding Human

The reason it sounds so convincing isn't because it's thinking. It's because it learned from an almost incomprehensible amount of human writing.

Think about how much text humans have produced. Every book ever written. Every website ever published. Reddit threads, news articles, Wikipedia, cooking blogs, movie scripts, scientific papers. Billions and billions of examples of how humans use language.

The AI studied all of that — at machine speed — and found the patterns. How sentences are structured. How arguments unfold. How people explain things, apologize, tell jokes, give directions.

When you ask it a question, it draws on all those patterns to predict what a good answer would look like. And because humans have written millions of good answers to millions of questions, it usually lands somewhere reasonable.

Why It Sometimes Makes Stuff Up

Here's the part that trips people up, and it's important to understand.

These tools don't look things up. They're not searching the internet when you ask a question (unless you specifically turned that feature on). They're pulling from what they learned during training — which happened months or years ago and then stopped.

So when it doesn't know something — or the pattern isn't clear from what it learned — it does the only thing it knows how to do: it predicts what a plausible-sounding answer would look like.

And it does this confidently. Because confident language is what it saw most often in its training.

This is what people call "hallucination" — when AI makes up facts that sound completely real. It's not lying. It genuinely can't tell the difference between "I know this" and "I'm predicting this." It's always predicting.

What This Means When You Use It

Understanding this changes how you use AI — in ways that actually matter day-to-day.

Give it more context, not less. The more specific you are, the better it can pattern-match to something useful. "Write me an email" gets you something generic. "Write me a friendly but professional email declining a meeting request — I'm too busy this week but want to reschedule for early next month" gets you something actually usable.

Verify anything important. If you ask it about medication dosages, historical facts, legal rules, or anything where being wrong actually costs you — check. Not because it's always wrong, but because it can't tell you when it is.

Treat it like a smart first draft, not a final answer. It's excellent at getting you 80% of the way there, fast. The last 20% — the verification, the judgment, the context only you have — is still your job.
