Did It Actually Help?

This is not a performance review. Nobody's grading you. This is just an honest conversation with yourself: was that useful? You don't need a spreadsheet, a formula, or a set of business metrics. You need three honest questions and the willingness to be straight with yourself about the answers.
The Three Questions That Actually Matter
1. Did this save you time? Think back to the task before you started. How long did it normally take? How long did it take with AI help by the end of the week? If the answer is "roughly the same" or "it actually took longer," that's important information. If the answer is "noticeably faster" — even 15 minutes — that's a real win.
2. Was the quality good enough? The output doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be good enough that you'd use it, send it, or build on it. An AI-drafted email that you edited for two minutes and sent with confidence is a success. An AI-drafted email that you rewrote so heavily it would have been faster to start from scratch is a different story.
3. Would you reach for it again? This is the most honest measure of all. If the answer is yes, without even thinking about it — you already have your answer. The tool worked. If you have to talk yourself into using it again, that's data too.
The Clearest Signs It Worked
You don't need to overthink this. Here are the unmistakable signals.
You finished something you'd been putting off. Some tasks sit on the to-do list because starting them feels hard. If AI got you over that initial hump — helped you write the first sentence, gave you an outline to react to, or just got something on the page — that's a real benefit, even if you rewrote everything afterward.
You reached for it again without planning to. Maybe on day six you had something unrelated to your original experiment, and you thought "I bet AI could help with this." That instinct is the skill taking root. You're generalizing what you learned.
The task felt less draining. Some things aren't slow — they're just mentally exhausting. If AI made something feel lighter, that counts. Cognitive load is a real thing, and saving it is worth something.
The Clearest Signs It Didn't
Be honest here. These aren't failures — they're information.
You spent more time fixing the output than you saved. This usually means one of two things: the task was too open-ended for AI to handle well, or your prompts were too vague. Both are fixable. The task might just need more structure before AI can help, or your prompting skill is still catching up.
You felt like you couldn't trust it. If you spent the whole time double-checking every sentence, anxious that AI got something wrong — that's tiring in a different way. Some tasks require high trust in the output. AI probably isn't the right tool for those yet, for you.
It felt like a novelty, not a tool. If using AI felt like playing with a gadget rather than actually getting something done, that's okay. Not every task is a good fit. The experiment told you something real: this particular use case doesn't work for you yet. That's useful.
What to Do with Your Results
If it worked — expand slowly. Don't go from one experiment to ten overnight. Pick one or two adjacent tasks and try AI there. If AI helped with email drafting, try it for meeting prep. If it helped with meal planning, try it for grocery list organization. Build out from your win, one experiment at a time.
If it partially worked — adjust one thing. Don't throw out the whole experiment. Change one variable. Try a different tool. Try being more specific in your prompts. Try a different kind of task in the same category. Partial success usually means you're close — it just needs a small correction, not a complete restart.
If it didn't work — try a different task. Not every task is a good fit for AI right now. That's not a flaw in you or a flaw in the technology — it's just a mismatch. Go back to the idea list from Lesson 1 and pick something in a different category. The goal is finding your version of a good fit, not forcing one task to work.
